“The South”（アメリカ南部）は、画像の地図の地域のことを指します。実際には東南の地域ですが、200年前、「アメリカ」とは大西洋からミシシッピ川までの土地しか占めていなかったため、その地域は国の南の半分でした。
アメリカ南部の文化にはいくつかの特徴があります。
国内で大規模なプランテーション（綿花、タバコ、砂糖きびなどを栽培するための土地）に適した唯一の土地があった
そのプランテーションのオーナーは大勢の労働者が必要だったため、アフリカからの奴隷を連れてくることを始めた
1861年に南部の11の州は「アメリカ合衆国」から離脱し、4年間北部と戦った

“The South” is the part of the United States that is shown in the map. It is actually the Southeast, but 200 years ago, the U.S. reached only from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River, so it was the southern half of the country.
The culture of the South is unique for several reasons.
It was the only part of the U.S. where the land was suitable for large plantation agriculture.
The owners of those plantations needed lots of laborers so, unfortunately, they began to bring in enslaved Africans.
Eleven states of the South seceded from the U.S.A. in 1861 and fought against the North for 4 years.
These are the three main factors that define the boundaries of the South.
